On March 2, Tucsonans will get the chance to view some of the best films Mexican cinema has to offer when Cine Mexico kicks off.
Cine Mexico is a film showcase highlighting the works of Mexican directors and producers. The festival is dedicated to presenting the best in contemporary Mexican cinema to a diverse audience.
Featuring films by directors such as Rigoberto Perezcano, Yulene Olaizola, David Pablos Sanchez and Carlos Hagerman, the festival introduces a generation of young filmmakers from different regions of Mexico who are shaping the way Mexicans see and represent their culture on the big screen.
Sponsored in large part by Cine Tropical, Ambulante and the Hanson Film Institute, each film represents some form of Mexican custom and tradition.
“This festival is special in that it’s free, and it only focuses on Mexican films,” spokesman for the Mexican Consulate Julian Etienne said.
Etienne said the event has been received warmly by Tucsonans in previous years, with some films even having to be specially re-shown due to popular demand.
“We’re expecting at least 2,500 people to show up, and that’s on the low side,” Etienne said.
