After months of financial struggle and uncertainty, it looks like the House of Neighborly Service, a South Tucson agency that has been taking care of the community for over 60 years, will likely be handed over to Our Family Services, a non-profit that provides parenting classes, counseling and runs Skrappy’s a downtown youth center among other resources in the community.
“It’s good news,” Kampa said. “We think we’ve found a good partner to keep us open and running for a long time."Richard Kampa, a board member of the House of neighborly services, said that the board, the Presbytery de Cristo (a branch of the Presbyterian church that owns the property the House of Neighborly Service operates on) and Our Family are still working out the details of transferring the services under the new organization’s wing. A manager from Our Family is on site at the House of Neighborly Services at 243 W. 33rd St.
The House of Neighborly Services was forced to shut down for what was hoped to be only a month in September in an attempt to recuperate a $50,000 budget shortfall. Despite the official suspension of services, some programs continued to operate out of their own inertia, including a double-dutch program, senior services, tattoo removal and computer literacy classes. Though the transfer is not yet set in stone, Kampa said he hopes the House of Neighborly Service will be up and running under the management of Our Family sometime early next year.
